CLOUD

Dear Readers,
Most of you have seen the beautiful documentary about the wild stallion CLOUD. As you know, he's a real horse living with his herd in the real Pryor Mountains.
I just got an email from Ginger, the filmmaker and friend of Cloud and she's worried about BLM's plans for Cloud's herd.
Here's part of what she said:

"There will be the 'use of infertility drugs' on many mares, removal of horses in 2006, possibly in 2008 and 2010 to reach a genetically non-viable population of 100.
Then BLM mentions that they are studying the possibility of importing wild horses from Utah if the herd falls into genetic decline as a result of low herd numbers...

"The BLM reveals that it has no respect for nature and natural ecosystems. Nor do they respect the precious horses in Cloud’s herd and their right to live free. This is a rare Spanish population living in balance with their wilderness home. The herd was at zero population growth and the population even declined a bit during 2004 when it is believed that a mother mountain lion had her sub-adult offspring hunting with her. Then 'in 2004/2005 three adult mountain lions were successfully hunted ...'

confession

Dear Readers,
I admit it.
After a month of snow-rain-mud-sleet-mud, I gave in to the lure of sunshine today and spent more time RIDING than WRITING!
While I was out on the mountain, it occured to me that it would be fun if you shared your DAWN RUNNER sightings with me -- at farleyterri@aol.com, but you knew that, right? DAWN RUNNER is due out on May 2nd, and I'd love to hear WHEN and WHERE it's spotted first!
I think it's one of the prettiest covers yet. The artist did a great job of showing the Appaloosa mare I had in my imagination.
Takin' off my boots now.

Q & A for Thursday

Q: Do you know where I can adopt a wild horse? I live in ...

A: No matter where you live, you can contact the Bureau of Land Management about wild horse adoptions toll free at 1-866-4MUSTANGS or check out www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov

-----------------

Q: Could u please send mea copy of seven tears into the sea? my family really doesn't have a lot of money and i can't buy the book .it looks like a really good book and all but i don't have the money to buy it and when go to get a jod they tell me i'm to young to work . so if you could do that for me i'd love you for it because i really want to read it my address is...

A: Letters like yours tug at my heart. I want everyone to have all the books they want to read -- especially mine!
Sadly, I just can't send books to everyone who asks for them. Still, all is not lost! Most public and school libraries carry my books, and if they don't have them, they can usually borrow them from nearby libraries -- and that's totally free!
---------------------
Q: I've been wanting to write an adventure book for a long time, but how do I keep my story ideas from becoming like books I've already read? I'm CrAzY about the C.S. Lewis books, Chronicles of Narnia, and every time I try to start something the story seems to keep going back to that series.

A: How about introducing an element on which you are an expert into the story? I bet you can find something C.S. Lewis knew nothing about.
WILD HORSES dragged me into their world and helped me write THE PHANTOM STALLION because I live where they live. I'd been out to watch gathers and had gone to Catttlemen's Association meetings where they talked about wiping them off the range. It's not like no one knew about this, but few people were paying attention and I was.
Maybe you're into belly dancing or you buy amber rings from pawn shops, collect 1920's WANTED posters or do public service work with retired actors. Pick something you know intimately -- something you can describe with all your senses and make that an important part of your plot or your main character's life. It worked for me!

Another fansite

HI --
Readers suggested this fansite, too!
www.freewebs.com/phantom_stallion_lovers

My favorite part of the fansite is the "My Point of View" page. There, the fansite's hostess shows photos of what she thinks horse characters in the books look like. Some of them are amazingly close to what I had in my imagination.
Have fun,
Terri

Want to talk horses & books & movies?

Dear Readers,
Lots of you wish you had more friends who loved horses and books. This looks like a fun place to go "talk" about both.
But wait --
Please understand THIS. IS. NOT. MY. WEBSITE. It is a fansite. I'm not in charge of it and don't know the administrator. On a couple visits, though, it looked okay to me.

http://www.geocities.com/phantomstallionfansite/

If you go to the home page and click ENTER, then look toward the very bottom, there's a Sept. 2005 entry and a place you can click on FORUM, then create a login identity (No cost as far as I can tell AND you don't have to post your email address...It can be hidden...Always a good idea).
If you go visit, please let me know what you think.
I've got to tell you that the beginning of a discussion of who would be best to play my characters (human and equine!) in movies or TV is fascinating!
Hugs to you all,
Terri

Thanks

Dear Readers,
Thanks for being patient with my slow blog entries! I've been working hard on the new horse series and it's weird how it just feels like I'm in a different world while I'm doing it.
All your emails about needing to update my websites are not being ignored, though!
I wouldn't be able to live in my fantasy horse worlds if it weren't for you!
More updates will be coming soon!!!
Happy trails,
Terri
