This will keep you cool!
Dear Readers,
Just for a moment, you can imagine you're swimming alongside wild ponies!
Even though there's a commercial on the front end of this video clip, it's worth watching.
Best, Terri

Early News
Dear Readers,
A hearing date has been set for
H.R. 503, a bill that would
permanently ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption in foreign countries. It is next Tuesday at 2 p.m., which means you have time to email or call your Congressman.
Remember when Congress voted that horse meat couldn't be inspected by U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors? We thought that was good news, because our horses' bodies couldn't leave the country without being inspected, so what would be the point of killing them? But then the Department of Agriculture encouraged foreign meat inspectors to come into American horse slaughter houses and do the inspections.
So the killing goes on, but it could stop next week.
If this is important to you, let your Congressman know you want H.R. 503 to pass and you will be watching to see how your REPRESENTATIVE represents you!
Here's a quick way to help the horses1. Go to Congress.org
2. Look for the blue bar on the left and click on CONGRESS
3. Enter your zip code
4. A screen will come up with your senators and Representative(s) -- click on the Rep.
5. Then, you'll get a screen with Washington, D.C. and LOCAL (free) phone numbers
It's that easy and you deserve to
tell your representative how you want to be represented! Hint: When you call, it's very unlikely you'll talk to your representative, but someone will take your name and pass on your message!

Defiant Black Horses
Dear Readers,
I just watched an amazing film titled "The Wild Horses of Newbury" .
This is a 3 minute British documentary showing two black horses coming out of nowhere to defy the chainsaws of men logging ancient English oaks. The logging crew had already passed protesters (they're shown near the end).
It is wonderful, haunting and the best environmental statement I've ever witnessed --- both for preserving trees which help us breathe and horses which certainly don't act as lower beings we can slaughter at will.
Here is a link to watch the film.

My advice is to settle someplace quiet to watch it. The audio is nearly as touching as the photography.
Best,
Terri

Hi,
Did you know desert mustangs have the toughest hooves in the world? You might have suspected, but if you'd like to take a fun quiz on hoof health, check out http://equisearch.com/horses_care/health/hoof_care/hoof_050903/. It made me rethink what I thought I knew about thrush!
If the bottom of a horse's hoof isn't what you're dreaming of today, you might take a look at Orkneyjar.com. The Orkney Islands -- Seal Islands -- are off the tip of Scotland and if I could be instantly transported anywhere in the world for a day of exploration, that's where I'd go!
Have a great July day,
Terri

Wild Horse Defense
Dear Readers,
If you'd like to read an informed and well-written letter-to-the-editor about wild horses from the Environment News Service, here's an online address you should check out: http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/jul2006/2006-07-07-insdow.asp
If you've been wanting to write to your Senator or Congressman about wild horses, but weren't sure what to say, this letter has some GREAT points!
The letter includes a very sad photograph of a white mare who was shot on Valentine's Day on the Calico Range and one of a beautiful sorrel three-year-old up for adoption.
On a happier note, thanks so SO much to those of you who have been emailing me about WILD HONEY. It was a very fun book to write and I'm glad you enjoyed seeing more of Jake and Darrell!
Happy trails,
Terri

Equine Crime Fighters
Dear Readers,
WILD HONEY just came out today and I'm already hearing from people who are curious about police horses and their training. I was very fortunate to have research help from the Reno Mounted Police Unit and officer Jim Overton.
Watching the equine officers learn to stay cool during the discharge of blank guns and while pretend bad guys grab for a mounted officers' weapon, plus navigating strange obstacles, smoke, balloons and much more, was fascinating!
If you'd like to check out some cool photos of Reno police horses in training, you can visit this link:
