Dear Readers,
Yesterday, I saw one good reason you must insist on viewing your captive wild horses.
BLM took reservations from the public, then opened the Indian Lakes/Broken Arrow mustang holding facility in Fallon, Nevada, for four hours.
Good news: corrals were cleaner and less crowded than before. Feed was within reach. Horses look less frantic and traumatized. As they should. Many were born here. To them, sagebrush is no more than a scent on the wind.
Many born in the wild have been penned in soul-deadening sameness for 2 years.
We sat in our truck-pulled trolley. Our tour quieter was quieter than a fun park ride, but no less choreographed.  BLM staff -- John and Heather -- were friendly, responsive and shared loads of stats.
Yes indeed, BLM has learned to handle the tax-paying public.
First time visitors would find it hard to imagine the nightmare that was Broken Arrow.

For every wild horse facility open to the public, there are a hundred where you are locked out. We must insist of access, because it wasn't a bad dream.

Rocky Update- from Palomino

note from Palomino:

  Hi --
Here are a couple of pix of Rocky, at home in Shingletown.  He will be
up for adoption at a later date.  He is doing well, although not
completely out of the woods.  He is going through diapers and propane
like crazy.   Will be glad when the weather gets warmer.  Snowing and
very cold right now.

Having a few intestinal issues, but making the most of his "nursery"
and getting a little bit of exercise.  He got to go outside for about
15 minutes yesterday, and yes, we do know his blankie is pink even
though he is a boy.  But he is staying warm and that's what counts.

Due to his tummy issues, we are going through mass ""dipeys".
If ya'll know where we can get KROGER - OVERNIGHT UNDERWEAR W/LEAK
GUARDS FOR EXTRA PROTECTION AND OVERNIGHT ABSORBENCY, please let me
know.  We brought home 3 packs from Nevada, but they were gone in two
days.  "Auntie Denise" (PTL) brought several different types from
Redding over, but none compare with the Kroger ones.  There was one
that was "adjustable", but it just adjusted everything right out, and
of course he walked around in it as I had stepped into the other room.
wah!!  Oh well,  gotta love the newborns and everything that comes
with it.  :)

Hugs and thank yous to everyone who is involved in helping this little guy.

P.

Clothes Horse

 Dear Readers,
Georgina Bloomberg is an equestrian, daughter of NY's mayor and when she was interviewed, recovering from surgery which had kept her out of the saddle for a while, she talked a lot about her riding clothes and really, a week in her wardrobe.
Clearly Georgina lives a privileged life, but I like her attitude. Ex: she has a lot of mate-less slippers because she has 5 dogs.
Enjoy! Terri

HORSEHAIR COMPLETES THE OUTFIT
By BEE-SHYUAN CHANG , New York Times

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 29 I’m still recovering from back surgery I had last summer, so down here in Wellington, I start most days with physical therapy. I wore black Under Armour pants and T-shirt, and black, gray and red Nike sneakers, which are also my barn show colors. It’s basically like the colors and logo of a Nascar team. They travel with you wherever you go.
I just started riding a little again, so I get to wear my favorite riding clothes that I missed so much. I changed into my Ariat Olympia breeches in light blue and a black T-shirt. I also ride in Ariat boots — I’m sponsored by them — and a GPA First Lady helmet that has a larger brim than most helmets, which is great for blocking the Florida sun.

Rocky's wild sire

Dear Readers,
This mustang stallion is probably sire to Rocky, the foal I told you about yesterday. This wild horse is known as Bubba.
Latest text message from Palomino Armstrong says that Rocky -- if he stays stable -- will return to Shingletown tomorrow, where he'll meet Chili Pepper, Honey Bandit and all his other new pals.
Happy trails,
Terri

Mendable Hearts for Horses

Dear Readers,
Palomino Armstrong is famous for rescuing Chilly Pepper and Honey Bandit. Those two orphaned mustangs have grown up to be beautiful horses. Honey's not totally out of the woods, even after his first birthday, but Palomino and her family of dedicated 2 and 4 footed helpers have brought him a long way on the road to a real horsey life.
Most of us don't talk about the foals that are lost, but Palomino, Shirley, Betty, Bonnie, Willis and many others can tell you about them, by name.
Palomino is putting her heart out there to be trounced by tiny hooves, one more time.

This is Rocky. He is such a baby, he has no teeth. He is in Mama Shirley (wild horse angel for whom I named Mrs. Allen in the Phantom books) 's HOUSE

Here's the first report I got from Willis Lamm of LRTC

A foal was picked up last night by some well intended ATV riders.  They had seen the foal by itself in the Ruby Ave. area north of the Silver Springs airport during the late afternoon.  Around 8:00 PM, on their way home, they saw the foal again in the same location curled up next to a utility pole.  The band of horses that roamed that area was nowhere to be seen.  Although it would have been better for them to contact Daryl or the volunteers, they decided to take the foal home.

We got permission to pick up the foal and place it in LRTC's orphan foal project.  Betty Retzer and Bob Motamenpour retrieved the foal from his rescuers.  Mike Holmes checked out the area and confirmed that the foal was from Bubba's band, often seen near "Four Corners" in Silver Springs.  However at the time the foal was picked up the band was nowhere to be seen. Furthermore the foal appeared too weak to be  able to keep up with the band, so it was brought in to Shirley's.  Although Mike had later located the horses, and while we always like to reunite separated foals with their dams when we can even after we pick them up, it was definitely clear that this foal was too weak to be turned back with his band.

Due to Shirley sustaining a possible rotator cuff tear, the doctor has put her on "light duty.  The Dayton facility's capacity to take care of week-old foals is therefore become limited so Palomino Armstrong of the Chilli Pepper rehab project will take this foal, named "Rocky" by his original rescuers as he was found in a heavily rocky area.  The next few days will be critical as we have no way of knowing why Rocky fell behind and was left by his band.  He could have some serious underlying health problem.  Therefore he has been given the regimen prescribed for all foals that are received in his condition.  If he flourishes and once he is weaned, Rocky will be available to an appropriate adopter.  If he turns out to be half the horse that Bubba is, he will be magnificent.
(NOTE from Terri: tomorrow I'll post a photo of Bubba the wild stallion)

First things first:  when Rocky picked his way back into Nature, he checked out Matt, Palomino's husband
from Palomino:
Hi ya'll. Everything is going well so far. Just a quick note - If anyone ever finds a baby they think has been left behind, it is best not to touch it. There is a wonderful system set up where the foal Will be monitored to make sure it is safe and that way the mom has time to come back and get her baby. These foal are so delicate and they need their natural moms. You can call the brand inspect...or. LRTC or Willis Lamm. Shirley Allen, just to mention a few and they Will make sure it is taken care of in the best and safest way for the foal. It is also totally illegal to take a baby off the range without turning it in to the proper authorities. Just some info to protect the babies n the would be rescuers. Keep up the prayers cuz it's 3:50 a.m. n he just had his milk n he is resting comfortably n looking way cute! God bless you all for helping. Hugs P
Rocky can go outside & even feels frisky, but his energy is very limited and he's still a fragile little guy

If you read my blog very often, you know I rarely direct you to places where you can spend money, but I know Palomino & I've seen how she works for the horses.  If you'd like to donate to her efforts to save babies like Rocky, you can  click & donate to  Wild Foal rescue
Because Palomino KNOWS we aren't rolling in cash, she even has a spot to click on $5 contribution! Now, that's a (horse)woman who lives in the real world.
Best,
Terri

8 Tips that Work for Young Writers Now

Teen writers get serious, dedicating 4 days of spring break to writing for real with Terri

4th & 5th graders dive into writing with senses
  • Write about what you know. Does that sound boring? It's not. In northern Nevada, where I live, some people see cowgirls, soaring mountains, glossy red and white cattle and wild horses every day. My mail indicates those sights are not at all boring.
  • Use your senses. How does a sidewalk smell after a summer rain? Can you describe the sound of something that keeps you awake at night? What do you feel when you hug your grandmother good-bye? No experiences are wasted on writers, because we store each one in our brain cells!
  • Use plenty of conflict. Happily-ever-after isn't as much fun if your characters don't earn it. If your main character is rich, beautiful and lucky on page one and still rich, beautiful and lucky ten pages later, you might not have any readers left when you write THE END.
  • Find a critique partner (someone to read your story and offer suggestions). Be willing to listen to advice on things she or he knows about. Personally, I take horse advice from my critique partner, a former jockey and the owner of many horses. I take plotting advice from my mom, who reads about eight hours a day. She definitely knows if I need to pick up the pace or slow down and explain.
  • Enter contests which are limited to people your age or younger. That will cut your competition enormously. If you placed in a contest, you may be able to convince an editor that you are working on the craft of writing. Of course, you'll have to show her a darn good story, too.
  • Find out which publishers are printing the sort of stories you want to write. A great source for this is The Writers Market (it's very expensive, so checking it out of the library might be the best option) look at books in bookstores and check the copyright page to see which publishing house printed it.
  • Read. Read. Read.
  • Write. Write. Write.
