Sunday, October 26, 2008 Say Neigh to Cruel Horse Auctions   Dear Readers, You know the power of STORY as well as I do. Here's a chance to help horses by telling their stories. They can't do this themselves, so please help IF you have ever been to an auction and seen horses abused. The horse above was destined for death. Now, he carries riders, mostly children, on rides over the beautiful Dahana Ranch in Hawaii. But he is one of very few who escape. I got news of a new campaign to help such horses from the Wild Horse Preservation League. It's called: PROJECT SHAKE-UP. Have you ever been to a livestock auction and had a horrible experience? If you have, we invite you to join equine advocates all over America in Project Shake-Up. The media can't act as a public watchdog if they don't know the problem exists. Let's help them expose this crisis by supplying FACTS! *Send your story (complete with graphic photos, if you have them) of your sighting of equine neglect/abuse at a livestock auction to the addresses at the end of this blog. You can also participate if you have been involved in helping a friend who had such an experience first hand even if you did not. *Do you know names & locations of greedy auction dealers who ignore cruelty? Expose them. We have been getting so many stories this past year on auction dealers selling horses that were dying,injured, starving or dying of thirst. Stories have come in about empty water troughs, no food provided, knee-deep manure,horses sitting out in direct 90 degree heat for weeks at a time,handlers whipping the horses crying out in severe pain w/ broken limbs. *Dealers are selling "abandoned" horses without proper paperwork. Certainly some of these horses have been STOLEN. Advocates for horses are striking back! On Friday November 7th ( lucky#7) - advocates everywhere will be emailing their worst auction experiences to all three TV news networks. Well, I've been looking at photos of some of the young horses which will be available for adoption this weekend at the Wild Horse Sanctuary and as you'll see above, there's one with Queen's tiger-striped legs, one with Blue Wings' unlikely paint coloring and a foal with a crescent moon lighting his way! Monday, October 20, 2008 The Real Phantom, still running free Dear Readers, I'm a teeny bit sorry I don't have a new Phantom photo to pass on to you, but I'm awfully happy he's still free. Here's an up-to-the-minute update from Palomino: Just wanted to let you know our beautiful man [THE PHANTOM] did not honor us with his presence when we brought the horses in. We have at least two other stallions--one is Snorty--that NEVER come in for the "gathering of the babies"... Dianne [Nelson, owner of the Sanctuary] said that the ones that are truly still wild do not come in, as they don't really acknowledge us. Snorty and the other stallion never even come down to the feed ground. I haven't fed in awhile, but Matt actually saw the Phantom a few months ago when he was checking fences. I think that he is happier being out on his own than hanging too close. I figured you'd want to know. His little man [Phantom's Pride] is hanging out with the geldings now, but he will always be free and a stallion, so we obviously didn't put him in a pen. He is looking very handsome. Enjoy your mental pictures. Isn't it kind of cool that he's like his namesake from my books? Even though people love him, he's happier running free. Sunday, October 19, 2008 Working in the Wild Horse Nursery  Dear Readers, The blessings wild horses have brought into my life just never stop. I've made such great friends, seen some of the most awesome sights,and... okay, you get the picture! And the picture here is of my friend Palomino, loving a wild foal on its first day around people. Remember Palomino's name from the dedication to WATER LILY? She is a HARD WORKING volunteer at the Wild Horse Sanctuary where the Phantom lives. Note: Next weekend is adoption day, so if you can possibly get to this spot in northern California, you can get a super-bargain on a young, range-bred mustang. Half the times I've seen her, she's been wearing a cast :( but it doesn't slow her down. Besides being the (former) single mom of two boys (She just married a great, horse loving guy--YAY!!!!!), she's a baker for local restaurants & makes the best cheesecake in the world. She's the poster girl for the expression : COWGIRL UP! Here's a recent note from her. ....Spent the day haltering three of our babies. I didn't want these three to go through the chute as they have been through enough. One of them is the victim of a big kitty attack. (FROM TERRI: YES, SHE MEANS A COUGAR) He is a sweet little palomino that has a deep cut in his side and a big slice and chunk out of his bottom. We doctored what we could, but not sure how to get under the tail. The other one has a big owie on her leg and so we washed that and cleaned it and put on some meds. Another one is very small and kind of sad and she needed lots of love. She is my little precious. (until someone adopts her). It seems like you have to pull out their fear and the "bad" energy and almost absorb it into your self and then they calm down. I love doing it, but I find it very draining at the end of the day. Don't get me wrong, it's very satisfying, but amazing to me how much it takes out of me. Guess I'm probably weird, but it's so neat when they trust you and "need you". Anyway, how was your day? Wednesday, October 15, 2008 Where have all the horses gone? Dear Readers, Like Sam Forster in PHANTOM STALLION, I am not at my best when it comes to numbers, but I must share some with you. They're terrifyingly simple. Short version: BLM admits trapping 74,000 wild horses off the range BLM says there are 29,500 horses left on the range and that number may be high Simple subtraction = it won't be long until they're all gone. BLM, which you know I've treated fairly in my books, wants to kill horses so that they won't have to spend any more money on them, but, hello? Quit gathering them with million dollar helicopter round-ups & that would save a lot of money! BLM is not backing down from this "great idea", as you can see in this article from yesterday. LAS VEGAS, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Bureau of Land Management officials say more wild horses may have to be killed because of full shelters and a lack of federal money. The bureau removed an estimated 74,000 horses from the nation's ranges in the last seven years, with about 44,000 adopted and the rest euthanized or held in federal facilities and private shelters, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Tuesday The horses are removed from the wild to protect habitat and maintain an ecological balance, said Doran Sanchez, the land management bureau's communications chief in Nevada, noting more may have to be euthanized because the agency's budget is not expected to increase. * Terri's Note: this "habitat protection and ecological balance" argument is bogus. BLM is encouraging game animal herds (antelope & other animals people hunt) to grow unnaturally large, and they're not limiting cattle (because ranchers pay for each animal grazing on the range). Wild horse advocates say they will ask Congress to stop most of the roundups and return some of the horses to historic ranges. "How can we let our government destroy the last of what we have?" asked Karen Sussman, president of the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros. An estimated 29,500 wild horses roam 10 western states, with nearly 16,000 in Nevada followed by lesser populations in Montana, Wyoming, Oregon and other states, the bureau said, while Sussman estimates the total number of wild horses to be around 14,500. The Poet Goes to Indiana by Mary Oliver I'll tell you a half-dozen things that happened to me in Indiana when I went that far west to teach. You tell me if it was worth it. I lived in the country with my dog— part of the bargain of coming. And there was a pond with fish from, I think, China. I felt them sometimes against my feet. Also, they crept out of the pond, along its edges, to eat the grass. I'm not lying. And I saw coyotes, two of them, at dawn, running over the seemingly unenclosed fields. And once a deer, but a buck, thick-necked, leaped into the road just-oh, I mean just, in front of my car— and we both made it home safe. And once the blacksmith came to care for the four horses, or the three horses that belonged to the owner of the house, and I bargained with him, if I could catch the fourth, he, too, would have hooves trimmed for the Indiana winter, and apples did it, and a rope over the neck did it, so I won something wonderful; and there was, one morning, an owl flying, oh pale angel, into the hay loft of a barn, I see it still; and there was once, oh wonderful, a new horse in the pasture, a tall, slim being-a neighbor was keeping her there— and she put her face against my face, put her muzzle, her nostrils, soft as violets, against my mouth and my nose, and breathed me, to see who I was, a long quiet minute-minutes— then she stamped feet and whisked tail and danced deliciously into the grass away, and came back. Monday, October 13, 2008 En guarde! Dear Readers, Some of you may know that I was on my college fencing -- swordplay, not boards and hammers -- team. I loved it so much that even though I haven't competed with a sword for decades, when I was seeing the dentist the other day and discovered his son was a nationally ranked fencer, we talked THROUGH the effective period of the anesthetic the dentist had just given me. Ouch. Remembering how much I loved fencing, I totally recommend it to all of you. I promise to do a book touching on it soon and, if you're not immersed in a sport right now, but want to be, I urge you to try fencing. It's not only good for you physically, it is a thinking person's sport and there's definitely a touch of romance to it! Friday, October 10, 2008 Carry me back to the sagbrush Dear Readers, I am really enjoying these pictures and the memories they evoke. When you look at the swirl of white moisture in the photo below, can you blame me for imagining (?) a white horse named the Phantom in such a place. I'll never really know if the mustang I saw on that misty morning was real, but after twenty four books of his own, and a twin from Stagecoach, Nevada, I'd say he's real enough! Sunday, October 05, 2008 Wild Nevada Dear Readers, When Julia Richardson -- the HarperCollins editor who saw THE PHANTOM STALLION as a series, not a single book -- visited from New York, she had no interest in tourist attractions. She couldn't wait to see the playa -- remember Hammer out there? And Blue Wings?-- and she wanted to have lunch at the little diner which inspired Clara's, in the cowboy town of Gerlach. Remember where Sam pretended she and Jake were eloping? Poor speechless Jake. This week, you'll have a chance to relive your own PHANTOM STALLION memories by exploring wild Nevada. Hollywood Hopes & my mistake HI First, my mistake. I told you guys to click on the envelope at the end of my blog and I should have said click on the link where it takes you to the comments. Thursday, October 02, 2008 The Real Nevada Dear Readers, Starting this week, my blog will feature photos of the real Nevada! My fingers are crossed that we will have two photos each day AND you will be able to comment on them and tell me (and others) which scenes in the original PHANTOM STALLION books they resemble! Heads up for horse owners: the limping and discomfort of a sweet old Quarter Horse I've been helping out with was misdiagnosed as "just old" recently and both his owner and I were uncomfortable with the assessment. When a farrier came to shoe him, it turned out he had a big abcess which was giving him trouble. The vet is coming back asap. Wednesday, October 01, 2008 My Cheyenne Sweetheart Dreamer Dear Readers, For those who are new and don’t know Sweetheart, a wild orphan filly that PHANTOM STALLION readers named, you can read all about her here: http://equine.wisecomp.com/SSOrphan.html It's a great story and MUCH better in pictures. In short, though, she was an orphan almost 2 years ago & nearly died> Thousands of peoplewatched her progress and prayed for her recovery. From her rescuers: "It was thought at first she would be sickly, crooked legged and probably a pasture pet. Not likely now! She was close to 14.2 when she left here and doesn’t turn 2 until October! Nice, straight legs, no health issues!" Enjoy her story and come back to my blog soon. I'll have something new for you every day of October!
