Palomino's Miracle Mustangs & Other Friends
Dear Readers,
Friday I left home to drive to Shingletown, California.
For lots of us, it's the center of wild horse rescue.
First, I visited Palomino Armstrong's Miracle Mustang rescue and became reacquainted with:
Romeo and Collins, rescued mustang orphans
HONEY BANDIT -- after his tough start, it's hard to believe this beautiful, glossy, friendly 3 year old was heartbeats away from death many times
Donk, burro head of cougar control
Bear and Soldier, rescued Dobermans
Magic, rescued black Arabian
A piggy whose name I missed (but I did snap his photo)
Snickers, sweet Aussie
TRAVIS -- Palomino's son!
One of the coolest things at the rescue is the wild horse nursery. I thought I was walking into a bedroom -- and there is comfy bed, but there's also a cozy corral in one corner and a wall opens so that threatened foals that need food and care through the night can be "inside" where Palomino leaps from bed to tend them with round-the-clock care.
Talk about dedication!
More later,
Terri

Rocky Tries Out a Saddle
Dear Readers,
Do you remember this photo of Virginia Range orphan Rocky, the Rockstar "dancing" in a human house, all decked out in his diaper?
He's growing up and trying out different gear now and
PALOMINO ARMSTRONG, rescuer of many wild foals, sent along a letter and photos of his progress.
"Because of snow and ice, my plans to
take the Rock Star out in the round pen to be "saddled up" were foiled.
Thanks to our awesome nursery though, I was able to safely bring him in
and we practiced saddling up.
"Man" enough to wear pink (and a saddle)
First of
all, I know he is a boy, and the blanket is pink. But he is a very
manly mustang and can wear it well. Also, the saddle does not fit him
properly (of that I am well aware), but for saddle training it is
perfect. It is light and, as he will only be about one year old
on March 12, 2013, that is very important. It also has the appropriate
things to hang on his sides and the straps to go under his belly and
between his legs.
"As is very
evident, the Rock Star has absolutely no concern about wearing his gear
and moving around in it. He trusts us completely and loved the
attention. By the time he is ready to ride, the gear should be about as
comfy and non-existent as his mane to him."

Rocky Gets Sassy
 |
Rocky sasses the Doberman |
Dear Readers -- Wow, are we lucky! Another update from Palomino & her four-footeds. Enjoy! Terri
HI ya'll
Here
are a couple of pix of our little Terror. Just kidding - he is
definitely one who is happy with himself and knows what he wants, when
he wants it and how he wants it.
He scared me
to death today though. He was outside and some friends were over and
he started screeching. Sounded like he was dying. But he just wanted
to let us know that HE IS WHAT WE SHOULD BE PAYING ATTENTION TO. I was
truly scared though = cuz it sounded awful. But he was fine and just
making sure we knew he was there.
Now that he
has passed the 3 week mark we are deciding who to put in with him. I
would love to put HB in, but he is simply not fast enough if Rocky
starts to let fly. HB is very happy, but kind of like an old man. So
we will either put DaBubbles or Patches in with him. Even though it is
extremely important, it is always a little bit nerve racking to put
babies with others. Rocky is quite a bit bigger than the mini's, and i
know kicking and playing is an inherent part of what they do, but I
still worry..... Oh well - guess all the mommies do.
He was
pretty mad because he didn't get to decide when playtime was over and I
made him play outside for a little bit longer than he wanted. He stood
outside the door and gave me the "what for".
It's funny,
because he wants to eat everything that exists, or at the very least
chew on it. And he can reach further and further. Pretty soon I will
have everything so high I won't be able to reach it either. But I give
him an apple and he does great. He gets to chew and I don't have to
worry about what he is chewing.
Hopefully these pix are all the correct size for easy viewing.
He is getting lots of visitors and we welcome ya'll.
hugs

UP(and I do mean up!)DATE on HoneyBandit
Dear Readers,
Although HoneyBandit is not well, he's showing mustang heart and trying his best.
Palomino sent this last night and I hope it makes you smile. :) Terri
Just a quick update. Today was pretty exciting.
After a sleepless night with HoneyBandit, I was worried. He'd been restless, wanting to get up and down all night and he was making weird noises.
However.....HoneyBandit managed to get up BY HIMSELF today!
When I tried to take his blanket off, he figured -- no thanks! -- and thought he would leave! He even tried to buck.
Didn't work, but it was heartening that he reacted like a "normal" foal for a few seconds and later he actually tried to run across the driveway! That was quite scary as he almost landed on his face, but he boot-scooted for a few seconds.
HoneyBandit is not out of the woods, yet, but each day he shows a teeny bit more life!
Hopefully we will have some video and more pix up tomorrow. Take care and God bless. Thank you for all your continued support. p Labels: Honeybandit, orphan foal, Palomino

Little Horse Lost -- and found

FROM PALOMINO'S JOURNAL:
We made it through Saturday, Praise God!!!
I am officially in my "horse coma" / "baby survival mode."
In this state your only function in life is to take care of baby -- feeding,iv, cleanup, flipping, standing up -- Life outside no longer exists.
You can't think about the foal living or dying; you just have to tell yourself,
It is going to be so worth it when he is healthy and happy...All ya'll in our horsey world that are supporting this little guy, well you rock. It is so awesome how everyone comes together at crunch time. We have had people from the "goating community" offering fresh goat's milk, and other rescues are donating blankets. Usually I favor animals over people, but I have to say the people are definitely ranking pretty high around here, too.
To stay awake, I started counting Honeybandit's bites;
I applied medicine to 97 bites on this baby!

He also has a lot of weird cuts all over, but we are taking care of them.
BLM stated that a young horse had just beat him up, but the vet says much of the wounds are old and it would have taken 2 weeks for this damage to happen.
STILL, there are times when you can see a light inside and know that there is a teeny tiny soul in that beat up body. When Honeybandit kicks and thrashes around like a beached fish cuz he doesn't want his "yummies" (milk-mix), and then turns to grab a mouth full of hay as if to say,
I don't want it and you cant make me cuz I'm gonna eat hay instead - so haha!Labels: Chilly Pepper Miracle Mustang, Honeybandit, orphan foal
