Exciting Stuff

Dear Readers,
I'm leaving on a research trip. Since I won't be near my computer everyday, I've arranged for my webblog to run excerpts from the magazine articles I wrote about the cattle drive across the Black Rock Desert. If you see a blog entry titled BURNIN' DAYLIGHT, it's the story of that long ride on which I saw a wisp of white up in a canyon and started dreaming of the PHANTOM.
I hope you'll visit my updated PhantomStallion.com website and if you're in Hawaii on March 11, PLEASE come see me!
A MY SPACE page for the Phantom is under construction, so you might want to check that out, too.

Adios & enjoy.
Terri

Fingers Crossed

Dear Readers,

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
-- Margaret Mead

This morning a lawsuit was filed against the Dept. of Agriculture to keep the Secretary from hiring foreign horse meat inspectors.
I'll be posting more details later. I hope the lawsuit alerts the President and Secretary of Agriculture that we hate them making an end run around the will of the American people and Congress.

In honor of the horses who've already died, you might want to visit this link

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1867401

and listen to the radio story about Ferdinand, the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner-- "a famously gentle and playful old champion" slaughtered for his meat at age 19.

Thanks for your help,
Terri

Making It Easy to Put Horses on the Table

Dear Readers,
Yesterday I shared a rumor that the Secretary of Agriculture was about to make it easier to slaughter horses.

Today, he did it.

Secretary of Agriculture Johanns announced a rule change that will allow for the plants to pay for their own inspections allowing the CONTINUATION OF SLAUGHTER OF HORSES in our country.

Please contact your state representatives in Congress and tell them you do not want horses slaughtered for human consumption.

One of the quickest ways to express your opinion about this is to go to the American Humane Society's website and click on the instant letter. Just cut and paste this into your browser:

https://community.hsus.org/humane/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=3739282

Read the letter and click where it says: TAKE ACTION.

This is your chance to let the government know YOU ARE WATCHING and you care what happens to horses.

I've said it before, but I have to repeat: The horses would thank you if they could.

You can make a difference!
Please help,

Terri Farley

No WILD HORSE Steaks, please

Dear Readers,
US Department of Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns is still deciding whether three foreign owned horse slaughter houses should remain open. Rumor says he has the backing of President Bush -- called "the man who wears the spurs" by Conrad Burns, the one who proposed the Burns Amendment which destroyed wild horses' protection.
But the President hasn't gone public with his approval for the horse slaughter factories and maybe he won't if Secretary Johanns hears from YOU.
Can you spend five minutes keeping a horse from dying in confused pain? Really, if you skipped the commercials during one TV show today and wrote an email instead, you might keep a horse from ending up on a plate.
Write to Mike Johanns at mike.johanns@usda.gov or call (202)-720-3631.
Want to know what to tell him?
For most Americans: WILD HORSES AREN'T WHAT'S FOR DINNER.

Good News for Three Palominos

Dear Readers,

Three palominos from the Calico Mountains -- the area where the Phantom's fictional herd roams -- may have a happy ending after their capture one year ago.

The three wild horses are entering training to become part of the Marines parade color guard unit. For this parade unit, the Marines use only palomino mustangs!
Who promised the Marines he could find just the right horses? Remember Mike Myers, assistant manager of the Palomino Valley wild horse center who brought his wonderful mustang Wild Cherry to my library visit last summer? He's the guy.
To see photos and read more about the Calico Mountain palominos joining the Marines, you can go here:

http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060203/NEWS15/602030401/1144

If you missed my blog entry about Mike & Wild Cherry, look in my weblog Archives
for June 16, 2005. Go to http://www.terrifarley.com/2005_06_01_archive.html and scroll down until you see photos of a super sorrel mare.

It's worth noticing that Wild Cherry is twelve years old. Under current law, she wouldn't have a chance to be adopted. She would be sold to the highest bidder and since she's a big girl with some draft blood, you know that might mean slaughter.
Please check my blog on Sunday or Monday.
If you are willing to spend five minutes making a phone call or sending an email you can help save horses' lives.
Best,
Terri
