Dear Readers, Can you believe I'm already hearing from parents and readers who say books in the original PHANTOM series sold out for the holidays? Here's my best tip: call ahead & make sure the book store has the title you'd love to have! If it's not on the shelf, most shops are happy to order it for you & can get it quickly. If a clerk tells you "we don't carry it", I promise you, the books are available! Ask if you can make a special order. If not, phone another store or check an online source. This will save your parents, friends & relatives lots of running around. You don't want them to give up and pick out a nice pair of mittens, instead, do you? I mean, nothing against mittens. I love mittens, :) but when I'm inside and cozy, already, NOTHING takes the place of a book! I'll be away from the computer for a few days, so if you write me an emergency email & don't get a response, don't worry. I'll get back to you as soon as I can! Saturday, November 17, 2007 Outstanding Wild Horse Coverage If you'd like to see a concise and balanced news report on BLM's mishandling of wild horse deaths and adoptions, check this out: http://www.klas-tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=7350916 The current director is no Brynna Forster. Take a good look at the budget table shown in the story. Almost all of her money is going to helicopter round-ups and keeping the horses in pens, instead of trying to find homes for the horses she brings in. And, despite the deaths of hundreds of horses during the time of this interview, she was giddy about the job she's doing. According to government statistics, it's true that there are more mustangs in government pens than on the open range. Thursday, November 15, 2007 WILD HORSES UNDER ATTACK DEAR READERS, One of the best things about writing the PHANTOM STALLION series has been the friendships I've made with readers around the world. Crystal and I have corresponded for several years and hers was the very letter Senator Harry Reid read from those sent to me in the HEARTS FOR HORSES campaign for the mustangs of the U.S. And it was a good thing, because her writing is brilliant. Now Crystal is doing what she can to help the brumbies, the wild horses of Australia. Please read her letter and view her incredible video. At least the killers will know the whole world is watching. I read about it on www.savethebrumbies.org . They said that 4000 horses were shot by helicopter last month... and they had a couple photos of some brumbies that had been shot and left to die. One of them was shot twice and left to suffer and the other is of a mare who was shot and left to die while her foal stands by her side waiting. It's horrible what they're doing... I've even put together a video that I did for a school report on the brumbies that I want to upload onto youtube so that people will know the seriousness of the brumby situation. I might put it on there tomorrow... I'll let you know when it's up so You can take a look. In relation to the actual shooting, 4000 have ALREADY been shot and i JUST read... just THEN tht they're planning to shoot a further 10,000!!! The government says that's its necessary because the brumbies are ruing our natural habitats.... The RSPCA (who are meant to stand up for animal rights) are supporting the cull... and they haven't done anything to help keep the numbers down and stop the horses from breeding... they just go out and shoot the horses... let the numbers grow and thenb go out and shoot them again! These horses need to be protected because they have stood by our sides through war... the brumbies are the decendants of those horses... do they really want to kill the projeny of those brave horses that SAVED lives??? Yes the documents pertaining to the cull were kept a secret because they did not want a public outcry. If they KNOW that it will appect us so deeply, then y do they go ahead with it?? MANY people have made suggestions to the situation, about how the numbers can be controlled HUMANELY... such as infertility drugs or gelding horses.... yet the government chooses to overlook all the facts and just go out and shoot the poor animals.! My opinion is that the horses are causing damage... but why are we shooting them when there are other ways of controlling the numbers HUMANELY... and they seem to care more aobut what the animals are doing - who don't know they're doing it - than caring about what we, people, are doing to our environment - and we ARE aware of what we are doing. I am outraged by the thought of this cull... already 4000 horses have been killed inhumanely, and if a further 10000 are to be condemned then Australia will be making headlines around the world and we will be a VERY barbaric country in the world's eyes. Like Jan Carter from Save The Brumbies, i am ASHAMED to call myself Australian. We should be protecting these horses, not shooting them willy-nilly. From Crystal in Australia BEST OF LUCK!!! Wednesday, November 14, 2007 Another REAL PHANTOM sighting This just in from Palomino, a Wild Horse Sanctuary volunteer who knows the Phantom well -- "...saw him when we fed...I have to say that horse is a stud. He takes nothing from no one and he is taking great care of the mares he has. I think he is actually enjoying bossing the other dudes around. He seems to walk away yawning with great frequency after he has sent a message. I agree with dianne, the baby is beautiful...I'll try to get some pix of the baby cuz he looks totally different now. Tuesday, November 13, 2007 Real Phantom update! Dear Readers, I talked with Dianne Nelson at the Wild Horse Sanctuary yesterday about the Phantom and she says he's doing fine. He's a bit thinner than before, but she attributes that to him constantly running off other stallions. In his old stomping grounds, there probably weren't as many, as close, and he must feel like he has to lay down the law. Pride is turning into a silver roan -- very pretty -- and she can't decide which horse is really the lead mare. It looks to her either Baby (the cute pocket-pony roan) or the beautiful black Dann sister mare. If not sooner, my fingers are crossed I'll get to see them all in February when I go over to Redding, California for a booksigning. If any of you have credible knowledge about this, I would be very intereste to hear it. Some reports say the gunman have been encouraged to hide the horses' bodies to avoid a public outcry. I love the photographer's use of light. She transforms these carousel creatures into a band of live, startled horses. My mother loved carousels and I'm working on two stories about merry-go-round horses, plus, most of you are aware of my fascination with selkies...but I don't think that's why this photograph carried me away. Friday, November 02, 2007 Rats, Swords, Blood, Pizza and Cowboys Dear Readers, I can't unravel the reason you asked me such unusual and only slightly book-related questions this week, but they're so much fun to answer, I had to share a few. Q: What is something most people don't know about you? A: I once rescued a white lab rat, named him Francis and kept him as a pet for the rest of his life. Q: What is your favorite non-horse sport? A: To watch -- soccer! To participate in -- fencing! It's the only sport I ever excelled (sort of) in! Q: Do you have any unusual writing habits? A: Lots of them. Here are two: I donate blood after I finish writing most books. To me, it's sort of sharing a blessing for one I've been given. And, I use one special coffee cup when I'm creating and I don't allow myself to use it when I'm brainstorming or editing or rewriting. It was a gift from a good friend. The world's best teacher of science fiction! Q: What's your favorite kind of pizza? A: Hawaiian! Q: Which authors do your recommend for readers who enjoy old-days cowboy stories? A: For fiction, Zane Grey and Will James (his artwork is wonderful as well). My dad is currently reading Bret Harte, and I plan to check him out, too. For nonfiction, you might check out Home on the Range, by Cathy Luchetti, which tells you LOTS about the life of frontier women -- often in diary and letter form. Someday, I'm going to research (and write about, of course) women teachers in the early West! The idea's always tantalized me! More later!
