Clue #2

Dear Readers,
Have you figured out the clue to GYPSY GOLD hidden within COOGDY ?
If you have, I need to tell you that there's a second hint, this one to book 24, RUNAWAY HOME, hidden within the same collection of letters.
I hope you're having as much fun deconstructing this puzzle as I had constructing it!
Keep thinking ; it's good for your brain!
Terri

Dear Readers,
Lots of you are going back to school next week, but you've asked me to keep you up-to-date on horse slaughter news.

ON September 7th, the House of Representatives will Vote on H. R. 503 - TO END HORSE SLAUGHTER.

You can help right now.

1. First, email or call your congressman office and simply say
"I'd like my congressman to vote YES on H.R. 503."

Saying 11 words is simple for you, but horses can't speak for themselves.

This bill protects ALL HORSES -- not just wild ones -- from slaughter.
You can locate your representative by clicking on the following site. www.congress.org
or call the Capitol Switchboard - 202-224-3121 & ask for your Representative

2. A poll from a talk radio station aimed at farmers is taking votes on the anti-slaughter bill.
Please take the time to vote "yes" in the poll. Just click on this site and go down to the polling question on the right. Today (Friday)is the last day to vote.
Then check the site on to see how the vote came out.

As I write this, the horses are losing.

Thanking you for caring,
Terri

New Mini-movies

Dear Readers,
I have a cool new feature on the SCHOOL NOTES page of Phantomstallion.com http://phantomstallion.com/guides/index.shtml
and here's how it came to be...
Last winter I saw an online book report done by Laura, a PHANTOM STALLION reader in Hawaii. She attended Seabury Hall school on the island of Maui and Mrs. Linda Lindsay, the school's librarian posted video book reviews to the school's website.

I wrote to the school to thank Laura for her great report and mentioned I'd be sort of in the neighborhood -- on Oahu -- for a booksigning & would love her to come visit.

Mrs. Lindsay wrote back like a flash. In response, I mentioned I'd be working for awhile on a ranch on the Big Island of Hawaii. Then, she and Seabury's headmaster invited me for a school visit and of course I said YES!

It turned into an adventure. I left the ranch at 2 o'clock in the morning to drive (alone) a dark mountain road to the Kona airport. When I say dark, I mean Hawaiian law mandates there can only be a few lights because they interfere with star viewing from Mauna Kea Observatory. One of my Western characters might say, "It was as dark as the inside of a cow!" Plus, I didn't exactly know where I was going.

Still, I made it to the airport (where an airline ticket was waiting for me -- thanks Seabury Hall!) in time to catch my plane. Wearing a cowgirl style coat and boots, I flew from Kona to Honolulu to Maui (three different islands) where librarian Mrs. Lindsay greeted me with hugs, a BEAUTIFUL flower lei and a most welcome cup of coffee.

The drive to school was fun, because Mrs. Lindsay acted as my tour guide and of course librarians know almost everything! When we arrived, I was treated like a friend by Seabury Hall's headmaster, staff, teachers and students!

I had a great time giving my Hooked on Horses workshop, showing my mustang film WILD ONES, autographing books and talking about wild horses, Celtic shape-shifters and books!

If you want to go along on this Hawaiian adventure, check out the School Note page of Phantomstallion.com http://phantomstallion.com/guides/index.shtml and watch the movies!

Looking forward to the day I can come to your school,

Terri Farley

Gold & Something New

Dear Readers,
Just a quick message to tell you that this afternoon I got a hot-off-the-press copy of GYPSY GOLD. The sticky note on it from my editor says it should be in stores on September 5th. Yippee.
Also, my website designer -- the WONDERFUL WILLA -- and I are working on something kinda exciting for both PhantomStallion.com and TerriFarley.com. Promise to let you know as soon as it's up and running.
Happy August!
Terri

You are so thoughtful!

Dear Readers,
Quite a few of you have emailed me because you saw the northern Nevada fires on television or read news reports about them.
I live in an area which burns almost every summer, so we're as "used to" it as people can be, but this one started just about a mile from my front door. Luckily, it burned away from us.
Still, the horses didn't care for the smell or the helicopters with huge buckets of water flying overhead. Whiskey, a Quarter Horse gelding, was rearing and neighing as if he could snatch the fire bombers out of the air. I, however, was really glad to see them!
Some excellent newspaper photos of the fire are online here:

Thanks again for thinking kind thoughts,
Terri

Wild Honey

Dear Readers,
This is amazing. Usually the wonderful letters and emails taper off a little bit after my books have been out for a couple weeks, but that hasn't been true for
WILD HONEY.
It's been out since July 1 and you're still being so enthusiastic that I'm getting more notes from you, instead of fewer.
I loved writing WILD HONEY! It was so much fun!
I've been thinking about a police horse story ever since I went to New York a month after September 11th.
I've always been a nervous flyer, so I took the train all the way from Reno, Nevada, to New York City. My friend Lynda Sandoval (author of WHO'S YOUR DADDY)who'd just stopped being a police office to write full-time, got on the train in Denver, Colorado and we rode the train all that way, sleeping in our seats because we're both pretty short.
Although New York was full of justifiably nervous people, everyone was nice, especially at Harpercollins.
When I visited my publisher's offices for the first time, they showed me the artwork for the first PHANTOM STALLION cover. It was so beautiful, my eyes filled with tears.
That night, Lynda and I went to a play on Broadway and when we came out, officers were patrolling on police horses.
I knew Lynda was afraid of horses, but I teased her that she shouldn't be scared to go up and visit with a "fellow officer" even if he had four legs and a tail.
"No way," she said, then added that she'd rather face a dozen bad guys.
Isn't that amazing?

Talk with you later amigas & amigos,
Terri

Hint

Dear Readers,
Thanks for patiently checking my blog while I've been "gone" working on my new book.
Since I think loyalty should be rewarded, you'll be among the first to know that my publisher has posted the cover copy (that's the plot description on the back of the book) for RUN AWAY HOME, the last book in the Phantom Stallion series, on both Harperteen.com and HarperCollinsChildrens.com.
Of course, I could put a link here, but I think a treasure hunt is more fun, don't you?
Have fun searching,
Terri

Snail Mail

Dear Readers,
I hope plenty of you are out there. This is me, waving to get your attention!
When you write to HarperCollins to request autographed photos of me & horses, please be sure you write your address inside the letter as well as on the outside. I know that seems like wasted effort, but a lot of times (especially if you use a small envelope), the post office stamps the postmark right over your address. When this happens, we try to find your address online, but that's rarely successful! So, if you've written to me and think I'm ignoring you, I promise I AM NOT. I just don't know where to send your postcard!
Frustrated,
Terri

Reading SO Rocks

HI,
I just did an interview with a cool website. If you'd like to see it (and EXPLORE!) go to www.TeensReadToo.com.
Once you're there, click ENTER, then on the left side of the page, click Author Interviews and on the next page you'll find my name amid many other writers I'm sure you'll want to "meet."
Have a great day,
Terri

Wild Horse Sanctuary

Dear Readers,
I know most of you are too far away to come visit the horses (and me) but you still like to hear about people who are helping wild horses live free -- in safety -- so I thought I'd show you this event I'll be attending soon.
If you visit the sanctuary's website, be sure to check out the opportunities for internships. This could be a dream come true for those of you would love to work with wild horses.
Happy trails, Terri

OPEN HOUSE SCHEDULED FOR WILD HORSE SANCTUARY

Experience the Thrill of Seeing Wild Mustangs Up Close and Personal!

SHINGLETOWN, CA – With magnificent Lassen Peak in the background, the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown will celebrate its 27th anniversary with an Open House on Saturday,

August 19, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Open House festivities include a docent-led walk to view the wild mustangs and burros up close; FREE horse rides for children 10 and under; silent auction; prize drawings featuring a grand prize Wild Horse Sanctuary weekend trail ride; barbecue; cowboy poetry, entertainment; and barn dance. Other returning favorites include demonstrations on horseshoeing, horse grooming, and saddling scheduled throughout the day, plus a question and answer session with a veterinarian.

Highlighting this year’s open house will be author Terri Farley, who will be on hand to sign copies of her latest book, Seven Tears into the Sea, and various titles from her popular Phantom Stallion series.

To help raise funds to care for nearly 300 wild horses and burros that roam the 5,000-acre Wild Horse Sanctuary, guests can bid on several silent auction items. Auction items include trips, gift items, artwork, and a selection of specialty merchandise.

“The Open House is our way of saying thank you to the community that has been so supportive over the years and to share the story of wild horses with visitors in a fun and relaxed atmosphere,” stated Dianne Nelson, Founder, Wild Horse Sanctuary.

A non-profit organization, the Wild Horse Sanctuary has served as a haven for America’s wild horses and burros since 1978. In its location at 5796 Wilson Hill Road near the northern California community of Shingletown (approximately 170 miles northeast of Sacramento), these disappearing symbols of the American West can roam free and live out their natural lives.

For more information and directions, call the Wild Horse Sanctuary at (530) 335-2241 or visit www.wildhorsesanctuary.org.
