Ransoming wild horses: The Ft. McDermitt rescue

As ransom soared past $30,000 and smoke from the Rim Fire passed the "unhealthy for all" stage, wild horse advocates lined up to rescue horses. As part of a coalition effort, I was on the ground at the Fallon Livestock Exchange as liaison for two days.

Running Sage

Photographer Cat Kindsfather first sighted RUNNING SAGE in the wild.

Dear Readers, 
Most of us want wild horses home on the range. 
When BLM or the Nevada Department of Agriculture rips them off their lands and threatens their lives, however, we step up to help.
 Mustang photographer Cat Kindsfather first photographed a dappled gray colt she called Running Sage in the wild.
 When he was rounded up, she came to his rescue and he now shares pasture land with other herd members who were taken away from their wild homes.

Blood Legacy of Outgoing Secretary of Interior

Dear Readers, 

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar ran the Bureau of Land Management for 4 years and stripped the Western range of  35,000 wild horses.

One-third of the captive horses were adopted, but at least 1,000 of those went to slaughter. 

 Fewer than 32,000 mustangs remain in the wild, today.

100 Paiute Mustangs Mend Broken Hearts

A herd of wild horses galloping, eyes bright, manes and tails streaming, may not know they swept away human hopelessness on Friday morning, but I want to thank them anyway!
Before BLM rounded up the Calico Mountain mustangs that inspired my fictional PHANTOM STALLION herds, my time with mustangs was spent on the range. Since last January, I've seen rarely seen wild ones free. Instead, they were harassed by helicopters, falling down mountainsides, slamming into metal trailers, crying or standing with heads in small corrals.
Friday, wild horses ran for the joy of it. Kind voices urged them down a wooden chute --"Take it easy, darlin'," "Baby, do you think you're a mountain goat?","Come on down, I need a volunteer." Yellow or green paint was daubed on tail tops, numbers were painted on their furry rumps and then they were loosed to gallop through Gate 1 or Gate #2.



For a couple hours, I opened the gates, based on a yell from Mike Holmes (sound familiar? he helped save the real Phantom Stallion!).

PURE JOY is the closest description of what I felt helping wild and happy horses.


I LOVED sprinting to a gate& flinging it wide for a galloping young horse. I LOVED reading equine ears and expressions and body language (sometimes even accurately!) to determine how or if I should move to show them the way out.

How did this happen?
A local tribe thinning its herds agreed to give these horses to Jill Starr's LifeSavers Horse Rescue instead of sending them to slaughter. Volunteers and donors did the rest. And I hope blessings are showered on them with the same selflessness.

Beautiful Oshunnah!



Dear Readers,
You've enjoyed lots of Cat Kindsfather's photographs. We have been sidekicks at round-ups and treks to wild horse corrals all over California and Nevada. But I like this one of Cat's photos because she's adopting this beautiful Medicine Hat mare.
We saw this mare together on the day Tuscaroara mustangs were first trucked into Palomino Valley. With a foal by her side, Oshunnah was clearly the VERY VIGILANT lead mare.
Now, her foal has been taken away, but Oshunnah will be under Cat's protection in January.
Cat tells me that Oshunnah is Apache for Spirit of the Earth.
Isn't she lovely?
