Teachers & Librarians: Free books for you

Dear Teachers and Librarians,
Multiple copies of the Phantom Stallion and Wild Horse Island foreign language editions pictured here are sitting, unloved, in boxes.
The French translations are soft cover and I have no Spanish editions, but the books shown above are

free to good homes !

Education Tip: When I do school visits, I bring along American originals and foreign editions. Then, because cover art differs so from country to country, I ask students to compare/contrast cultural perceptions of today's American West. Even the little ones love looking for clues to make matches.
If you’d like to check your libraries for HarperCollins copies you already have, these books are, from left:
TOP Row: Phantom Stallion 2, 3 and Wild Horse Island 1
MIDDLE Row: Phantom Stallion 3, 4, 8, Wild Horse Island  2
 BOTTOM row: Phantom Stallion 4, 6, 5, 6

Feel free to shoot me a personal email farleyterri@aol.com  from your school or library email address if you’re interested.
Have a wonderful school year,
Terri

Use Your Lovely Hula Head!

Dear Readers,
I'm working on my next newsletter & wanted to give you a heads-up on the August contest.
I'll be sharing Hawaiian research photos and asking you which fictional event they helped me to describe! Of course this will be a book from my WILD HORSE ISLAND series. You don't have to supply the book's title or number, because if you're correct about the event & character, I'll send you a free, autographed copy of the book.
Start thinking hula thoughts!
Aloha,
Terri

All is Well on the Big Mountain

Dahana Ranch, heaven for horses

Dear Readers,
My Hawaiian friends are all right. You asked & I'll tell you more in a minute.

Backstory: At the Vacaville library and in this blog, I talked about destructive tsunamis and earthquakes in Japan. I talked about learning lots about these natural forces as I researched SEA SHADOW and other WILD HORSE ISLAND stories.
I discovered I wasn't the only fascinated (and fearful) one. Six copies of SEA SHADOW went with me to the library & I came home with none.
So, here's what's up in the Islands...Kylie on Oahu, was inland at college and safe, but her family (with all of their pets) were evacuated from the coast and headed up to see her at the dorm...Linda, my friend & Maui librarian said they were fine, but I must check on Seabury, her school. My visit there is a wonderful memory...Kuuipo', at college in Wyoming, was worried about her family on the Big Island. Their Dahana Ranch is inland, but they've had so many earthquakes. I heard from her step-mom Kiyo, " that though the nearby cities of Kona and Hilo had some damage, "all is well over on the big mountain."

Thanks for caring,
Terri

HoneyBandit update and a Question with a prize

Dear Readers,
I'm a little late getting this HB update to you, but i promise it will still make you smile. I've highlighted my favorite part!
Question -- In one of my WILD HORSE ISLAND books, the story's theme revolves around the idea that even someone small and weak can have a huge impact on events in her life. I use a Hawaiian story of a flea to go along with this.
The first person who can tell me which book & which page will win an autographed WILD HORSE ISLAND book.
Aloha all,
Terri

Hi ya'll.

Been a busy couple of days. Yesterday, (Friday), some of our "new friends" came up and stayed with us. They then had a booth at the RAIN Flea market to raise money for Honey Bandit. We had a really wonderful afternoon/evening with Lee and Nona, and even had a little excitement around dinner time.

Honey Bandit had been out with Patches, but of course knowing we all had our cameras out, he was quite mellow and didn't do too much. A little bit of bucking and running, but nowhere near what he would usually do. I guess he is making it clear that he is not my little circus and will not perform on command.

So we put him back in our little carport, and we were chatting away when all of a sudden he went after Chino. He reared up and struck out at him and then started to buck and kick. (Now Chilly Pepper used to do that to the goat, Buddy, when she was cranky, bored or just out of sorts. They are still best friends.) At first my husband thought he didn't like the dogs anymore, but then we remembered that Chilly used to do the same thing. I guess it is kind of like when your kids are being brats and fighting with each other or arguing. Anyway, the way things were set up we came close to having a hoof in the head, not to mention numerous other items that were in peril.

So we had to re arrange his little nursery, move my bed to one end, and of course since he was cranky he couldn't play with his dogs.

Today, Matt and I built a little "wall" between Honey Bandit and where we "live". Instead of the blankets, he now has a big fluffy pile of straw, more like a real horse stall. He is pretty happy with it. Most of you saw the pictures of him in his "new bed". For now we are just doing the best we can in here until we can build the nursery. I keep thinking about the other 2 foals I heard about whose mom's were not taking care of them. However, they are in a place where there is an outbreak of strangles and it wouldn't be fair to do that to Honey Bandit. He wouldn't survive getting sick with his immune system. Hopefully they have already found new homes. But it will be nice when we have a real nursery and a place where we can quarantine someone who is sick as opposed to not helping them.

But for now, Honey Bandit is doing well and he is our big focus. We are planning on going to the protest in Sacramento on the 23rd, and I have been asked to speak. That makes me nervous, but if I can help the horses by telling Honey Bandit's story, then I will do so. Hopefully we will have lots of people with us and don't forget we need to make signs. Please feel free to use any of the pictures of Honey Bandit that I have sent out. The more focus on his story, the bigger difference we will make. It will take all of us to get him to Washington DC, and we are hoping that people will caravan at least part of the way with us.

I got to do that for the bicentennial celebration when I was in high school. I got to ride my pony with the wagon train for a few miles. We won't be in a wagon train (darn) but would be cool to have a big caravan a long the way.

Well, Honey Bandit wants his evening milk. Thank you everyone for all your support and the love you send him.

God bless, p

HORSE EXPO!

(my Horse Expo roommate)

Press release horse expo

Best-selling author and wild horse activist Terri Farley will share the skills and passion characteristic of her 36 best-selling books free of charge in WRITING THE WEST workshops at the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento, California, June 11 – 13.
Farley’s workshops explain how she uses hands-on research experiences from driving cattle and riding in a Pony Express reenactment to job-shadowing Hawaiian paniolos and following the West's wild horses to color her Phantom Stallion and Wild Horse Island series.
Workshops for adults and children will be featured.
Farley is especially excited about WRITING THE WEST for kids, which introduces young authors to writing outside the classroom.
"Writing opens a world of adventure superior to TV and video games," says Farley. " When kids take the reins and write their own stories, they can gallop through the sagebrush, tame wild stallions or giggle as unicorns nuzzle their necks.”
In nationwide workshops, Farley teaches adults to write memoirs, blogs, poetry and saleable stories.
Farley, whose PHANTOM STALLION and WILD HORSE ISLAND sales topped a million while she was working full time and raising a family, has little sympathy for adults who claim they’ll write a book “someday.”
"If you don't tell your story, who will?" Farley asks, "If not now, when?"
The Calico Mountain mustangs recently rounded-up by the Bureau of Land Management are the same herds featured in Farley’s Phantom Stallion series.
“I’m not let them going without a fight, and neither are my readers,” Farley says of the West’s wild horses.
When the Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board refused to read even one among hundreds of protesting letters from her young readers, Farley became a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit to save the herd.
Farley will autograph her books in the Young Rider Park and Book Corral, after each presentation. A discount coupon is available on Farley’s website at PhantomStallion.com.

May I borrow your brains and flying fingers?

Dear Readers,
Just like Brenda Starr, the comic book girl reporter first published in the 1940's, I need some newsy tidbits!
Have you ever seen articles -- online, in newspapers, magazines -- about me or the PHANTOM STALLION, WILD HORSE ISLAND, SEVEN TEARS INTO THE SEA or my horsey activities which you think I should share?
As you might've guessed, I'm putting big dollops of my time into helping the horses, but it's really time for me to update my press kit (which is something journalists and book publishers look at to see who I am and what I'm up to), and many of you have been keeping up better than I have.
I'm especially interested in articles published in other countries.
Any help would be wonderful and you can email me links at farleyterri@aol.com.
Thanks SO much!
Terri
