Thinking of ICE CREAM

Dear Readers,
Some of you have been shivering today instead of sweating, but in my part of Nevada it's been HOT. Can you help me cool down by sharing the name of your ONE very favorite ice cream flavor?
Melting,
Terri

Assurance Home, New Mexico

Dear Readers,
When you read this story about at-risk kids working with wild horses, I think it will remind you of the HARP program in the original PHANTOM STALLION books.
If you follow this link Teen Mustang Project you'll be able to skim down the page and see a horse that reminds me of Ace. Then, if you go back up to the top and look to the left at ABOUT US and click on the CBS News Special and go all the way down to the bottom, you'll see some girls that just might remind you -- well, you tell me. Do any of them look like HARP girls?
Reading so rocks,
Terri

DANCES WITH WILD HORSES

Dear Readers,
Last week I met Michael Blake, author of DANCES WITH WOLVES and many other works about the West, and I can't decide whether to call him a treasure or a secret weapon for our wild horses.
I hope you'll go see this website and read along with me as I enjoy his book about a wonderful wild horse.

TWELVE: The King

Happy trails,
Terri

Rescued Sea Lion

Dear Readers,
Sometimes good things happen, like a year-old sea lion being rescued on a California freeway even though it played hide-and-seek under a police car with the police office and a marine mammal rescuer.
Best,
Terri

Rodeo Queen

Dear Readers,
I was excited to discover that Abby, a rodeo queen and team roper from Lake County, California is a fan of my WILD HORSE ISLAND books! Check out her queen's belt buckle!
And wasn't it nice of Chris Platt (author of MOON SHADOW) to snap this photo of us? (note: some of you can see it & some can't -- weird, but I'm working on fixing it! sorry)
My readers are absolutely the best!!!!!
Reading and WRITING rock!

Wyoming worries

Dear Readers,
I've just heard that BLM wants 1,000 of Wyoming's 3,500 off the range. If you have knowledge of what's up, please share. I'll start digging tomorrow.
Best,
Terri

RIDER-WRITERS REJOICE!

Dear Readers,
I'm a judge! Not a horse show judge or a courtroom judge, but I'm very excited to be working with the GIRLS HORSE CLUB on a great new competition for horse stories, only!
I'm off to celebrate Father's Day, but I want to share this with you, first ---

COWGIRL ARTIST and more

Dear Readers,
Do you remember which PHANTOM STALLION book shows Sam and Jen cruising around rodeo shops (really booths and tables), looking at saddles and neon ropes and all kinds of other things? That's where I've been for the last few days, meeting people, signing books and watching some amazing horses and riders.
I love the drill and flag teams! We were able to watch rehearsals and competitions and see the horses' mad skills.
Rodeo visitors call also see the work of some talented artists such as Stephanie Long. She's not only an artist, she trains cutting and reining horses. Cool, huh?
I've posted her photo with her prize winning art above, and you can read more about here, here: Cowgirl Artist
The West has many faces!
Enjoy,
Terri

Reno Rodeo

Dear Readers,
For the next week and a half, I'll be meeting readers and riders at the Reno Rodeo.
If you are in the area, stop by the Sundance Bookstore/Writing the West table in West Hall (the indoor arena). I'm really lucky to be sharing the table --conveniently located next to the ladies' room :) and big screen rodeo-view TV -- with Suzanne BULLRIDER Morgan Williams, Rosanne Parry (Heart of a Shepherd), and Chris Platt (Moon Shadow)!
Ride on,
Terri

Silver Bullet

SILVER BULLET: what one needs to kill a vampire or werewolf
In common usage: refers to any straightforward solution that would by extremely effective
In BLM usage: Whew! We're out of the wild horse business!

Dear Readers,
Remember last summer when BLM was talking about a silver bullet to end the "wild horse problem" ? Documents giving details of the plan have been opened to the public and they're chilling.
Here's a press release you may want to read:
Detailed Plans to Eradicate Wild Horses
A few days ago I told you I'd quote directly from the BLM advisory board minutes when they came out. I've just discovered that won't be until they're approved in late September. By then, many more horses will have lost their freedom and lives.

Keep you eyes open,
Terri

Wild Horse Mismanagement

Dear Readers,
Isn't the logo for the BLM's wild horse program pretty? I wish it reflected the Bureau's plans and actions.
As any of you who watched the live streaming video** from the Wild Horse and Burro advisory board meeting in Sacramento yesterday, there was lots of talking and some of it was troubling.
Some reports from BLM employees are too disturbing to wait until the meeting minutes are available. Of course I'll update when they are.
From my notes:

- BLM is considering upsetting the gender ratio in wild horse herds. They would change it so that hers would be 70% stallions. What a terrible idea.
Not only would many stallions be injured in fights, the mares might not survive. I hope that's not part of the plan.

-Despite BLM's repeated protests that they can't afford to care for our wild horses, the BLM's wild horse program turned down money from the Federal stimulus program

-BLM hasn't made an "annual report" to Congress since 2004, but reported they should have have one ready in 2011.

More to come,
Terri

**I would love to hear from any of you who were able to watch ; did it work for you?

Wild Horses' Danger

Dear Readers,
Yesterdays Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board meeting was a roller-coaster ride. The horses have so many devoted FRIENDS, but the BLM's dark intentions and irresponsibility are clearer than ever. I'm very concerned and will post details later.
Best,
Terri

Wild Horse P O W E R !

Dear Readers,
Do you want to watch the BLM Wild Horse & Burro advisory board in action, tomorrow?
Nevada Horse Power, the organization responsible for our wild horse license plates which fund efforts to preserve Nevada's mustangs, will be streaming the entire meeting LIVE. This includes testimony for those of us who want to share opinions with the board, so they can pass them on to BLM.
The first part of the day will cover what's going on with BLM and wild horse.
Testimony starts at 3:00 PACIFIC time. I'll be there along with some great young horse-lovers!!!
Here's where you can go to watch it all LIVE online:

It would be wonderful if you could send good thoughts winging our way,

Madeleine Pickens Update

From Madeleine to you:

My positive meeting in Washington, June 9th, with the Senate Majority leader, Harry Reid and Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar was very encouraging. Jerry Reynoldson will be working with officials from the Interior Department moving in the right direction to close the loop and bring everyone on board with my business plan. In addition, we look forward to working with the newly nominated BLM Director, Bob Abbey.

Please visit my website, www.madeleinepickens.com for continuing updates on our progress. Also, if you haven't already done so, be sure to "Take Action" on my site to keep the signatures coming to Ken Salazar. It really does make a difference!

Keep the faith!

Win a Morgan Horse!

Dear Readers,
This exciting contest was won by a nine-year-old Delaware girl last year, but any of you UNDER 21 are eligible to win!
I promise, a short visit to this website MORGANS! will have you day-dreaming about winning your own Morgan.
Send off an email to chris@morganhorse.com for an application, essay directions, and other contest details.
Then, while you're waiting to receive them and get started (the deadline to enter is Sept. 1), check out Copper Beech Morgans, farm of Ann Hailey, who'll be donating a horse from her breeding program. Look around and you'll find a photo of the horse that was donated last year. Can anybody find his nickname?
Have fun!
Terri

Great summer poem

Summer Cottage

by Anne Porter

This is a house
That smells of melons and roses
Sea-wind pours through it
The airy curtains float
And the wiry sprays
Of the sea-lavender
Tremble on the table

The hushed roar
Of the massive ocean
Covers us night and day
It shelters us
Like a tree shadow
We live in it
As in a forest.

How's Your Horsey Memory?

Dear Readers,
I just found some quizzes on my books on FunTrivia.com. After looking around, it looks like a safe and fun site. Like any Internet site, though, keep your eyes open & don't accidentally sign up for anything.

Phantom Trivia Challenges
At a glance, the quizzes don't look easy. Let me know if you think they're accurate!
Have a wonderful June day,
Terri

I hope you'll explore HORSE EXPO ! I'll be there soon and I'd love to meet you. In fact, I have ideas for a get-together that I'll be sharing as soon as I get things solidified.
If you're too far away to come to the Western States horse expo, there are others across the country.
